  1. Place 3 tbsp of cocoa butter, 2 tbsp of shea butter and 2 tbsp of grapeseed oil in a double boiler over medium-low heat.
  2. Let them gently melt down to liquid form.
  3. Once melted, allow it to cool down a bit like for 3 minutes without solidifying.
  4. Now stir in 10 drops of lavender essential oil, 7 drops of geranium essential oil and 7 drops of tea tree essential oil.
  5. Pour the mixture into silicone molds.
  6. Pop them in the refrigerator for an hour to harden up.
  7. Store the lotion bars in a mason jar in a cool dry place.

Shea butter is definitely better than coconut oil for acne. However, if you like coconut oil better for your skin, then definitely use it for Oil Cleansing rather than Moisturizing. In Oil Cleansing, you won’t let the coconut oil stay on your skin and give it a chance of clogging up pores. So if you’re to use coconut oil for acne, then only use it for Oil Cleansing!

Not long ago, I shared a post on Shea Butter for Yeast Infections. Turns out, shea butter can be useful for treating fungal infections externally. It’s got lubricating properties and it soothes itchy and irritated skin. But adding a few other natural anti-fungal substances to shea butter can create a powerful DIY shea butter anti-fungal cream.

  5. Apply liberally on the affected area. This DIY shea butter fungal cream is for external use only! Do not use it internally.

Caution & Tips

  • Before you use it on sensitive areas like the groin, do a patch test by rubbing ½ tsp on your inner elbow. Wait for 1-2 hours. If you do not see any irritation, then it’s safe for you to apply. If there’s irritation, do not use the cream on your body.
  • If you’re in a hurry, you can simply pour the melted oils straight away into the storage container and let it set in the fridge for 10 minutes before use. Do this instead of whipping it, if you’re in a rush to use it.
  • Do not add more drops of essential oils thinking you’ll get more benefits! It doesn’t work that way. For essential oils, less is more. If you add more than the required drops, you can sustain chemical burns that won’t cure quickly even with modern medicine. For every one tsp of base ingredient (shea butter, carrier oils, etc), add 1-2 drops of essential oil. Do not go above this ratio.

1. Direct Application. I’m always someone who uses minimal ingredients on my body. And when you have sensitive skin issues like acne/keratosis pilaris, by all means use miminal skin care products. What I mean is, I don’t go ahead and slather different products on my body. I stick to homemade stuff and even if it’s homemade, I make sure not to mix up a whole lot of ingredients. So simply slathering a suitable amount of pure shea butter on your keratosis pilaris can be very effective in reducing inflammation and redness. It’s best when you use it in the shower before toweling off.

2. Tea Tree Oil Mix. Tea tree oil is very good at treating keratosis pilaris! It’s a powerful disinfectant that fights off bacteria and germs. What’s more is that it’s also a good anti-inflammatory substance. It reduces inflammation, hence reducing the appearance of keratosis pilaris.

3. Sugar scrub. My sugar scrub just consists of ½ cup of fine white sugar, ¼ cup of liquid coconut oil and a few drops of rosemary oil or dried rosemary powder.   1. Melt the shea butter, beeswax pastilles and coconut oil in a double boiler over medium-low heat. Stir occasionally to help the ingredients evenly melt together.
  2. Once melted, remove from heat and let it cool down slightly then stir in the jojoba oil and magnesium oil.
  3. Now place the melted oils in the refrigerator to cool down for 15 minutes. When the time is up, the mixture should be opaque or partially solidified.
  4. Using your hand mixer, whip up the opaque mixture into a silky cream.
  5. Add the lavender essential oil and whip again.
  6. Scoop the mixture into a clean mason jar. Keep away from children and pets.
  7. To use, rub a suitable amount on the back of legs and bellies.

Shea butter makes a great leave-in conditioner on its own. But if you mix it up with other natural ingredients, you can make the ultimate DIY shea butter leave-in conditioner to nourish your hair on a whole new level!

What you Need

  1. First begin by melting your shea butter and coconut oil in a double boiler. You can simply mash it up with a spoon but if you want a smoother leave-in conditioner, first melt the shea butter. Instead of using a double boiler, you could consider using a makeshift one: Place your shea butter and coconut oil in Pyrex measuring cup and placing the cup in a pot filled with ½ cup of water. Make sure the water doesn’t enter the cup! Now heat the pot on a medium-low heat until the shea butter & coconut oil melt completely.
  2. Once melted, remove from heat and stir in the olive oil and raw honey.
  3. Now keep the Pyrex cup in the refrigerator for 15 minutes. This is to make it solidify halfway so that when it’s easier to whip into a cream with a hand mixer.
  4. When the time is up, get it out and mix with a hand mixer until it resembles whipped cream.
  5. Then add the essential oils and mix again with the hand mixer.
  6. Transfer your DIY shea butter leave-in conditioner into a sterilized jar.
  7. Store in a cool place and use within a month for best results. It stores up to 3 months. You can keep it in the refrigerator.
  8. To use, scoop a little and apply to damp hair that’s just been washed with shampoo. Make sure you apply just enough – don’t over apply because you don’t want to grease up your hair!
